Before the circus had a name, there were two.

Laverne and Shirley were Chiweenie sisters. Sixteen years. Adopted in Los Angeles because nobody else would take the pair, and because Joey and Joe were not about to split them up. They were the first dogs. The ones who taught this house what a pack was.

They were named like the sitcom on purpose. Laverne started the bit. Shirley finished it. Together they could claim a cushion, empty a treat bag, and look personally betrayed by a closed kitchen. Short legs. Long opinions. Zero interest in being anyone’s “almost.”

Los Angeles was their first map. Then came the ordinary years that turned into the scrapbook: car rides, couch forts, the slow, stubborn joy of two small dogs who had been passed over and then refused to be small about living. Eyes faded. Hearing went. They still found each other in a room. They still found the Joes.

Every pile-up on this site starts with them. Soprani, Bones, and Scotty walk a hallway those two already wore smooth.

They are gone. We miss them every day—not in a speech, in the dumb little spots where they used to be. Nobody wanted them once. This house did. That was the whole plot, and it ran sixteen seasons.
